What cities were divided into occupation zones by the Allies at the end of WW2?

At the end of WW2 the victorious Allies divided all of Germany into zones of occupation. The capital city of Berlin that sat far into the Russian zone, was also divided into zones. The division of Berlin became a contentious issue between Russia and the U.S. resulting in the Berlin wall being built. The city of Berlin was no longer 4 zones but simply east and west. The whole country of Germany also became East or West. Austria, the birthplace of Hitler was also divided into occupation zones at the end of the war. Vienna like Berlin was divided into zones but was governed differently and did not result in territorial problems. Austria and Vienna did not suffer the same fate as Germany and was granted full independence 15 May 1955.

Val Wilkinson, I wonder if you are being too hard on Dr-Gabor Eva? Are they saying they never heard of Vienna? Or are they saying they never heard of Vienna being divided? I would say the latter, seeing that 60% of the people responding only knew about Berlin.

I lived in Augsburg, and Honschtetten , Germany in 1949-1951 my father was in the Army, we were occupation forces. Berlin was divided Russia was East Berlin, America was West Berlin.

Some pedantic people on here. The question WAS about the cities NOT the countries. Berlin & Vienna WERE separated into different zones so the question is correct!

Mark Snyder, Austria does still exist, but the Austro-Hungarian empire ended during WW1.

Sorry I didn't see anything about Vienna Austria. The four zones with France, Soviet, UK & US and Berlin being divided in East & West but nothing about Austria. A lot of history here, it is always great to explore more by these questions and keep learning. Happy Easter to one and all.

The explanation is inaccurate. The Berlin Wall was not built because of tension between the Soviet Union and the US. It was built in 1961 by the German Democratic Republic to stop German citizens in East Berlin fleeing to West Berlin. Western Allied troops (British, French and US) still remained in the Western sectors of Berlin right up until 1994. Soviet troops left East Berlin in the same year. The GDR government built a border wall around the entire territory of the GDR from 1961 onwards, again to stop its own citizens fleeing to the West. The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) was declared in 1949, the German Democratic Republic also in 1949. The Western Allies declared the end of military occupation in the FRG in 1955. The FRG had already joined NATO in 1954 and, following the end of military occupation was permitted to rearm, thus becoming a sovereign state, although Allied troops were and are still stationed there throughout the Cold War to the present day. Austria was declared a sovereign state in 1955 as well, but only on condition that it remained neutral.

The city of TRIESTE, in Italy, was also divided into occupation zones. Probably other occupied territories went through this procedure. Never heard of a divided Vienna, though. You absolutely have to get your facts straight!

Val. She didn’t say she’d never OF Vienna. She said she never heard it. As in heard it was divided. Now who should feel ignorant for being so mean. I have never heard that either. A few others said they hadn’t heard it either.
