Bolivia has its constitutionally recognized capital in the city of Sucre. In this country, the actual seat of national government was established around 1898. Sucre became and remains Bolivia’s constitutional capital. It is the home to the country’s Supreme Court.

The city of La Paz subsequently became and is the seat of the executive and legislative branches. It is the home of the president, Congress, central bank, government ministries and foreign embassies. Also, La Paz is about 250 miles to the north; and it has a population four times that of Sucre’s 250,000.

Nonetheless, Sucre is an actual and constitutional capital. It is the place where Bolivia gained its independence and was founded as a Republic.

Accordingly, residents and others continue to point to Sucre as the Capital of Bolivia. They will also point out that most of the administrative work and key functions of government for the country take place in La Paz.
