In the 'Superman' series by DC Comics, the famous 'Superman' emblem contains a red letter 'S' on a yellow background. The rest of Superman's costume includes a blue suit, red pants, yellow belt, a red cape and red boots.

Superman debuted in 1938 in the first issue of DC Comics 'Action Comics', yet he was not always the well-loved cape-wearing, injustice-fighting hero loved today. Before Superman's appearance in 'Action Comics', creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster published a short story in 1933 called 'The Reign of the Superman'. In this story, Superman was a homeless man called Bill Dunn, who got tricked by an evil scientist into taking an experimental drug. The drug gave Dunn the powers of mind-reading and mind-control, which he used for profit and amusement.

After a poor reaction from the public, Siegel and Shuster decided to create a more heroic character. After revisiting their Superman character, they modified his psychic abilities and gave him superhuman strength and bullet-proof skin. The result was a crime-fighting hero instead of a villain.

The 'Superman' franchise has since been adapted for radio, stage, film, television, and video games. Superman was the best-selling superhero character in American comic books up until the 1980s and paved the way for more superhero characters to come onto the scene. Today, his iconic outfit is recognised by people all over the world.
