Every year, Greeks all over the world celebrate Greek Independence Day, (Greek National Day) on March 25. This is the day when Greeks remember their long struggle against the Ottoman Empire, an effort that eventually lead to their independence.

Interestingly enough, March 25 marks the beginning of the Greek War for Independence, not the end. The Greeks had been under the rule of the Turks for almost 400 years since the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Once the capital of the Byzantine Empire was taken, it was only a matter of time before much of Greece fell under Ottoman control.

During the war for Independence much of Europe sided with the Greeks most notably the British, French and Russians.

The revolution ended in 1829 when the Treaty of Edirne established an independent Greek state.
