What country do "The Smurfs" come from?
"The Smurfs" come from Belgium. They have appeared in three feature-length films and two short films loosely based on "The Smurfs" comic book series created by the Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford (worked under the pseudonym Peyo) and the 1980s animated TV series it spawned. The 2011 feature film of the same name and its 2013 sequel were produced by "Sony Pictures Animation" and released by "Columbia Pictures".
The main characters are imaginary blue creatures housed at a mushroom village in the middle of a vast forest. There are more than hundred Smurf characters, and their names are based on adjectives that emphasize their characteristics, such as "Jokey Smurf", who likes to play practical jokes on his fellow Smurfs. "Smurfette" was the first female Smurf to be introduced in the series.
The word “Smurf” is the original Dutch translation of the French "Schtroumpf", which, according to Peyo, is a word invented during a meal with fellow cartoonist André Franquin, when he could not remember the word salt.
