It's Canada!

When taking off from Detroit and flying directly South, although you may be on a domestic flight to, for example, Houston, Texas, the first country you fly over for a few minutes is actually Canada!

It's true. When flying directly South from Detroit, you fly over Windsor, Ontario for a short time, then you resume flying over U.S. territory. It's that tip of Canada that reaches right under Michigan.

The same question could be asked about what country you cross when driving from the mainland city of Point Roberts, WA to Seattle, WA. And the answer is the same: Canada! You have to drive through Canada to get from Point Roberts to Seattle...

WRONG ANSWER. When you take off from Metro and go directly south you don't even come close to Canada you go straight into Ohio. Yes Canada is south of Detroit, but Metro airport is 35 miles west of Detroit and what's directly south of Metro airport is Michigan and then Ohio.

When you take off from Detroit and fly south you are first flying over US soil before you cross into Canada.

Unless the end of the runway is the Canadian boarder, when the plane first takes air it is flying over the US.

Kenneth Maloy, Incorrect. When you fly out of Detroit you go southwest. You're already 35+ miles from the Canadian border. A pilot would have to deliberately aim toward Canada to make that happen, and then Canada would be the second country after takeoff. No matter how you slice and dice it, the USA is the first country you fly over. I have flown in and out of Metro Airport so many times I can't count. And I never once went over Canadian territory. And yes it's a trick question. Windsor is directly south of downtown Detroit.

Dean is right. I lived in Michigan and flew out of Detroit often. It's a long ways west of the downtown Detroit area. It's west of I-75 and that goes straight down into Toledo.

The runways go north and south. So, when the plane gets to flying height to make a turn it is above Canada. Put it in your head and think about it.

It appears the question should have read "What country is due south of Detroit?" But because of the way it was written it introduced airport location and flight paths

Taking off in Detroit you are taking off in the USA. So the USA is the first country you're above the ground in. Even if you cross into Canada, the USA is the correct answer.
