What country was the first to declare war, in what became WWI?
Archduke Franz Ferdinand, of Austria-Hungary was murdered by a Serbian born anarchist, in Sarajevo Bosnia June 1914. The Archduke was the heir to the Austria-Hungary empire, and Serbia, was blamed for the murder.
Austria-Hungary first made a list of demands that it presented to Serbia. When the demands were not met in full, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.
Russia which had an alliance with Serbia, mobilized it's troops and prepared to defend Serbia. Germany mobilized to defend it's ally Austria-Hungary, from Russian intervention. This was how the great war began, it was a regional issue that spiraled out of control.

there is no apostrophe in 'its ally' as this is a possessive pronoun ... it's = it is

That’s the mean reason why I seldom write comments and post question because an English grammar guru in the cyberspace criticizes the grammar construction all the time. This just a fun game.

Laurie Bowman, Well said, I get pedantic when people use cap locks but when it comes to the spelling, people should review the questions and complain then , so the author knows.

Why is having correct English a problem? I noticed the same word usage. My son would find it odd that the assassin was not listed, Gavrilo Princip.

Jas Newman, Yes, it was taught as an exception...but I believe today its' usage is not taught at all unless it's possessive.
