Tom Clancy's "The Hunt For Red October" released in 1984, was the first fictional publication by the Naval Institute Press and readers' introduction to his central character, CIA analyst Jack Ryan.

On the first page, the newest and most advanced submarine in the history of the Soviet Union, the "Red October", is launching from Polyarny Inlet on the Arctic Ocean. Little does anyone know as this happens that the Captain(and his officers) are conspiring to show the Americans just what this new sub can do.

Soon Jack Ryan is flying from one ship to another across the Atlantic trying to locate Red October, while more and more Soviet naval vessels put to sea, knowing what the Captain plans to do, and want him stopped no matter the cost!

This was the first of ten Clancy novels starring Jack Ryan published over the next twenty years, but only two others would return readers to the Soviet 'Evil Empire' first introduced to us in "The Hunt For Red October".
