Grace Barnett Wing gave birth to her first and only child, a daughter, on January 25, 1971 at French Hospital in San Francisco. She had previously joked that if she ever had a child, she would name him or her “god”, with a lower-case “g”, so the child would remain humble. In the hospital with her newborn daughter, she repeated this jest to a nurse.

In Slick’s version of events, the Hispanic nurse appeared at her bedside with a birth certificate suitable for framing and asked what the girl would be named. Slick said she saw the crucifix at the nurse’s neck and repeated the joke. The nurse took it seriously and quickly left the room to phone a reporter. Slick actually named the child China—an important but not inflammatory name—Wing Kantner, as the baby’s father was her Jefferson Airplane band-mate, Guitarist Paul Kantner, but an urban legend was born: "Grace Slick wanted to name her child God.".

In 1961, Grace Wing married Gerald “Jerry” Slick, a cinematographer who played the drums. After watching a performance of his band “Great Society”, she joined as a vocalist and guitarist. In the fall of 1965, San Francisco-based psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane lost its lead vocalist and asked Grace Slick to join. She met and started a relationship with Jefferson Airplane Guitarist Paul Kantner. Her marriage to Jerry Slick ended around the time of China’s birth.
