During the annual Wimbledon Tennis Championships, ticket-holders often enjoy the tournament's traditional treat: strawberries and cream.

The dish has been served at Wimbledon since its inception in 1877. Strawberries have long been considered a delicacy in Britain; Thomas Wolsey, lord chancellor to Henry VIII, is credited as the first person to combine the fruit with cream when he served strawberries and cream at a banquet in 1509.

At the time, strawberries were enjoyed by the wealthy while cream was a favorite of peasants, so strawberries and cream together were considered a melding of the two worlds. It seems an appropriate treat for the Wimbledon then, since match tickets are democratically distributed; even the wealthiest tennis fans must wait in line for a chance to enter.
