What does a hygrometer measure?

Hygrometers measure the amount of moisture or humidity in the air, but there are a number of different types of hygrometers, and they display their results in different ways. Most hygrometers display their readings in the amount of water in a given volume of air, making the units milliliters per cubic centimeter. Alternatively, some hygrometers measure relative humidity, which is expressed as a percentage with no units.

Joanne Serin, Barometers actually measure barometric pressure. The pressure of the air around us, which is why so many temperature measuring devices like thermometers also have barometers. 🙂 Hygrometers would be similar to hydrometers in that any word with hydro as part of its etymology would have to do with water. (Whereas baro means pressure.)

Since warm air is capable of holding more moisture than cold air, relative humidity refers to the amount of moisture (in percent) present in air at a measured temperature.
