What does "canada" mean in Indian?
The name of Canada has been in use since the earliest European settlement in Canada, with the name originating from a First Nations word kanata for "Big Village." Upon Confederation in 1867, the name Canada was officially adopted for the new Dominion, which was commonly referred to as the Dominion of Canada until after World War II.

Actually, the origin is that a group of settlers were playing Scrabble and talking about what they would name the land they "discovered". One reached into the bag of letters and pulled out

This question is SO messed up. Firstly, as a country, Canada should be capitalised. Secondly, we do NOT have Indians in Canada. We have First Nations people and Aboriginals. Thirdly, there are DOZENS of "Indian" languages. So Canada doesn't mean anything in "Indian". I find it DISGUSTING that this question made it through the review process. And even more that the opinions expressed on the question are 115 favourable and 15 not.

Huh...I always thought it was derived from the Spanish word...canada means valley or arroyo in Spanish, though it has the tilde over the n. (pronounced "can-yada"). I always wondered why they chose that name.

Actually they need to be more specific, and state that they mean American Indian. In the nation of India, Kanada is actually a language.
