What does "gelato" mean?
Gelato-which translates to “frozen” from Italian–is a frozen treat from Italy which was originally created in the 16th century. Historians are not sure who originally invented it, but the one of the most popular versions of the story is Bernardo Buontalenti, a native of Florence, created a form of the modern gelato. He impressed the court of Catherina dei Medici with his delicious frozen treat. From there is spread across Italy and then the rest of Europe. Shops began opening and the tradition passed from father to son for generations. This continues into today, all across the world.

earlepg, Gelato comes from the verb "gelare" to freeze. It can also be an adjective and it means frozen. If it is used as a noun, it means Italian ice cream. The question is not very clear.

After I was offered gelato a few weeks ago, I looked online to find what it means, and in several different sites, it said that it is "Italian ice cream". None of them simply said "frozen". After submitting my answer and seeing that it was accepted, I looked it up again and found the same answers.
Since Italian ice cream waa described as a frozen dessert, I chose frozen as my answer. I agree with klmilles that all of the choices descrbe, or tranlates, to ice cream. Gelato gets a "yum" from me, too.

it means ice cream. It's just what the Italians refer to as ice cream. I'm a pastry chef and have asked Italian chef's what is the difference between ice cream and gelato. No difference. Americans call it ice cream. Italians call it gelato.

The English word gelid also means icy or very cold.
A good coffee gelato and ice coffee are among my favourites.
