What does RSPCA stand for?
RSPCA Australia (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is a federation, with an RSPCA in each state and territory and RSPCA Australia as the national body. The state and territory member Societies provide services to animals in need through their shelters and inspectorates.
They work to influence animal welfare in policy, practice and legislation all across the country. RSPCA care for animals across Australia, by rehoming neglected and unwanted animals through their shelters and by educating the community about responsible pet ownership. They have Inspectors which work hard to prevent and check up on reported cruelty to animals. They also advocate and play a bit part in the improvement of farming welfare and scientific research on animals.
They have a range of education resources which teachers, schools and community groups can use and help to educate children and communities on the safe and proper way to care for and farm our animals.
RSPCA Australia was formed in 1981 and owes its origins to RSPCA England as it is the UK experience which led to the formation of the Australian Societies.
