SPF is an abbreviation for "sun protection factor". A sunscreen's protection factor (SPF) is figured by comparing how long it takes sunscreen-protected skin to burn to the length of time it takes unprotected skin to burn. The higher the SPF, the more protection you get against UVB rays.

If you stay in the sun longer then the "SPF rating" you will most likely get sunburn. Some sunscreens are not water proof which would not help with the time alotted for the sunscreen to be doing its protection.

If you are planning to go tanning on the beach plan for the tan and the time you are there.
