What Does the "D" in D-day stand for?

In fact, D-Day is a military term, which is used to describe a day of the beginning of some operation. Globally, the phrase is used to refer to one particular event, which is the the Allied landings in Normandy on the 6th of June, 1944.

And what does "D" actually stand for? Nothing, as it was just derived from the word "day". Some people also believe that the letter used to stand for the word "date". Anyway, all the possible meanings of the letter are connected with some particular or special day of the beginning of the military operation.

I was always told it is Disembarkment Day, you larn some thing new, I did get it right though

I think the original meaning was disembarkment day. As in so many things it has been lost through the years

Since it says it stands for "Day", wouldn't the answer be DAY, and not "nothing"?

I answered this question incorrectly. This is what I found out online. The D simply stands for “day.” The designation was traditionally used for the date of any important military operation or invasion, according to the National World War II Museum. Advertisement. The correct term for the D in D-Day is decision day.

Good question, but I also thought "day" - interestingly in French it is called "Le Jour J" which adds substance to this.

All of you that have said that it actually stands for "Day" are right. It was the chosen day that the Ally powers selected to initiate the invasion of France (6/6/1944) in order to liberate us from the Axis powers. It belongs to military terminology and the closer you get to the action it becomes H-Hour, and even M-Minute.
