The "P" stands for Pierpont in John Pierpont (J.P.) Morgan's name. Pierpont was his mother's maiden name.

Morgan was an American financier and banker who dominated the corporate finance and industrial consolidation in of the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of Morgan's largest consolidation projects formed the U.S. Steel Corporation, the first billion-dollar industry in the world. He also was behind the formations of General Electric, International Harvester and AT&T.

Morgan, who is considered by many to be "America's greatest banker", also had investments in railroads across the country.

At the height of Morgan's career in the early 20th century, he and his partners had investments in many large corporations, while holding influence on the nation's finance and many a U.S. Congressman.

Morgan died in 1913 at 75. At the time of his death, his fortune was estimated at $80 million. The sum prompted oilman John D. Rockefeller, the world's first billionaire, to say, "and to think, he was even a rich man."
