What dog breed is this?

These dogs, which are called Irish Terriers, come from Ireland. The breed is considered one of the oldest among many other breeds of terrier. The breed was provided with a separate class in 1873 for the first time. By the end of the 19th century, Irish Terriers had become the 4th most popular breed in the UK and Ireland.

Irish Terriers are active and friendly companions for people. Most of them are brave and very playful. Some owners even say that Irish Terriers are in a constantly in quest of adventure. They easily get along with their families and can live both in the city or in the country. They are also well suited for any kind of weather, as they have harsh fur.

Having been the president of a dog training club in Studio City for two years in '75-'77 sometimes helps. All four of these dogs look "sort" of alike, especially with the "beard" around the muzzle. The Scottie was definitely out of the running though. Usually very black, it has its own distinctive look and is short. The border terrier is brown and shorter. The airedale, on the other hand, is normally taller and has a coat that is brown with a black "blanket" covering its back and sides. Only the Irish terrier is a redhead (all over), as in the picture, and relatively tall. Of course sizes of dogs vary considerably as do their colors. For example, the four-puppy litter that our sort of short sable sheltie produced (with an average size male) included one under-sized, two average-sized and one that was over-sized.
