What event appeared at the 1900 Olympics but was then dropped due to 'lack of spectator appeal'?
The men's underwater swimming was an event at the 1900 Summer Olympics schedule in Paris. The 1900 Games were the only occasion such an event was held. It was held on 12 August 1900. 14 swimmers from 4 nations competed. It was not featured at later Olympic games because of lack of spectator appeal.
The gold medal winner was France's Charles Devendeville who covered 60 metres underwater in a time of 68.4 seconds. Although second place covered the same distance in 65.4 seconds the gold medal was awarded to Devendeville. The score was given by adding one point for each second and two points for each metre swam underwater with the most points being the winner. Devendeville's total was 188.4 compared to 185.4 for second place.
