Hungarian is the language spoken by the majority of the population of Hungary and other Hungarians, who are spread over the world. Approximately 1,5 million Hungarians, for example, live in the USA.

Hungarian is included into the list of the official languages of the European Union. Hungarian belongs to the Uralic language family. Hungarian, Estonian and Finnish have the most native speakers of any other languages from the family. They are also the only representatives of the family in Europe.

Nowadays about 35 Uralic languages are spoken in Northern Eurasia and North America. The language family gets its name from the territory around the Ural Mountains, where these languages are widespread.

Magyar is the Hungarian name for the language. English speakers usually refer to the language as Hungarian, but they also use the word Magyar to describe the Hungarians as an ethnic group.
