The Hungarian Franz Liszt (1811-1886) is widely recognised as one of the greatest composers of piano music who ever lived, as well as being a virtuoso pianist himself. However, unlike his contemporary Chopin he did not only compose for the piano. He was also involved in politics and a keen promoter of other composers.

He had an interesting private life before he turned to religion in his old age. One of these liaisons was with a woman called Marie d'Agoult, (1805-1876) who, like George Sand, wrote under a male alias; in her case Daniel Stern.

One of the children of this union, Cosima Gaetana (1837-1930) became the 2nd wife of Richard Wagner. After his death she took over the reins of the Bayreuth Festival.

Liszt was personally close to his son-in-law, and maintained strong connections to the Bayreuth Festival after Wagner died (in Venice) in 1883.

Perhaps it would have been his wish to die there as he did, on the 31st July 1886.
