What famous novel is the prequel to the Lord of the Rings?

The Hobbit (also known as There and Back Again) is a children's fantasy novel by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. It was published in September 1937 to wide critical acclaim, being nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. Central themes of the story focus on the personal growth and heroism of key characters. This book still remains popular and is recognized as a classic in children's literature. It has never been out of print.

Encouraged by the book's critical and financial success, the publisher requested and obtained a sequel. The Hobbit, a great work of Tolkien, was subsequently followed by another very popular and great work, The Lord of the Rings.

I was fortunate enough to have an author of children books as a teacher at Intermediate (11-12y.o.) He read the Hobbit to us 30-60 minutes at a time. The teacher in the next class came in thinking there was nobody there, we were so quite. An amazing experience I have never forgotten. The you William Taylor.

Kenneth Dallas, I disagree. I wrote a very interesting paper (at least I thought so) on the Silmarillion many years ago when I was in college. Tolkien was never boring.

This is factually inaccurate. Originally my The Hobbit was not set in the same reality tv as The Lord of the Rings was. The publisher demanded that Tolkien make that change for a latter edition because LotR was so popular.

Myndman, The Silmarillion takes place before the events in LOTR, and many characters from the Silmarillion are mentioned in LOTR; they are linked, so it is a prequel. The fact that it was published later is irrelevant - the Star Wars prequel movies came after the 3 "original" movies...

I read the Hobbit and the trilogy back in the 60s and then re-read them every couple of years and still enjoy picking them up every once in a while.
