The Hobbit (also known as There and Back Again) is a children's fantasy novel by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. It was published in September 1937 to wide critical acclaim, being nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. Central themes of the story focus on the personal growth and heroism of key characters. This book still remains popular and is recognized as a classic in children's literature. It has never been out of print.

Encouraged by the book's critical and financial success, the publisher requested and obtained a sequel. The Hobbit, a great work of Tolkien, was subsequently followed by another very popular and great work, The Lord of the Rings.
