The Flying Finn is a nickname given to several Finnish athletes. Originally, it was given to several Finnish middle and long distance runners. The term was later extended to notable Finnish racing sportsmen. The nickname was first used for Juho Pietari Hannes Kolehmainen (9 December 1889 -11 January 1966). He was a Finnish four-time Olympic Gold medalist and a world record holder in middle- and long- distance running. He was first entitled with the nickname ''Flying Finn''.

Paavo Johannes Nurmi (13 June 1897-2 October 1973) was a Finnish middle- and long distance runner. He was nicknamed the ''Flying Finn'' as he dominated distance running in the early 20th century. Throughout his 14-year career, Nurmi remained unbeaten in cross country events and the 10,000m. Vilho ''Ville'' Eino Ritola (18 January 1896-24 April 1982) was a Finnish long distance runner. He was known as one of the ''Flying Finns''. He won five Olympic gold medals and three silver medals in the 1920s. Lasse Artturi Viren (born 22 July 1949) is a Finnish former long distance runner. He is winner of four gold medals at the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics. He recaptured the image of the ''Flying Finn''.
