What former president of the U.S. joined the Confederacy?
Although not one of our most illustrious presidents, he left a legacy of sorts. He was the first vice president to replace a president who died in office. Tyler also had the most legitimate children of any president (15), and he was later elected to the Confederate Congress. In 1861, he led a delegation to Washington to help solve some of the problems between the North and South. When the differences weren't resolved, he pushed for Virginia to secede, and in late 1861, he was elected to the Confederate Congress, but died in 1862 before he could take his seat.

Christopher Neal Wigley, George Thomas was a Virginian who was a slaveholder before attending West Point. When Virginia seceded, he stayed with the Union and became one of its greatest generals. His family disowned him but he knew where his loyalties lay.

I read about this as a young man. I was rather shocked to learn this. Being from Virginia, he was a slave owner. If things had been different, he may had still pledged his allegiance to the US. Sadly, he did not.

ya know?...yesterday there was a WH Harrison question and I explained I was reading a presidential history book my daughter bought me and was on Harrison...well...today I am on Tyler...should read a little faster...
