What is a Dackel?
The name "dachshund" is of German origin and literally means "badger dog," from Dachs ("badger") and Hund ("hound, dog").
These dogs were reputedly originally bred to aid in the hunting of badgers. Although "Dachshund" is a German word, in modern German they are more commonly known by the name Dackel or, among hunters, Teckel.

Helen Dakin, my limited experience is that they are not excessive barkers. I was given one for my 12th birthday. Blissfully quiet cw my previous dog, a crazy (but beautiful) cocker spaniel. Also, I can think of 3 owned by friends in the last few years.

My sister and brother-in-law have dachshunds/dackels. Tucker and Budgie are couple of characters!
