What is a garment worn on the head for protection or decoration?
Hats have been essential accessories throughout human history, serving both practical and symbolic purposes. Originally designed for protection against weather elements, hats evolved into powerful status symbols across many cultures.
In Victorian England, it was considered improper for anyone to appear in public without a hat, regardless of social class. The top hat signified wealth and status, while caps were associated with working classes. Some historical hats required extensive craftsmanship - the elaborate "Fontange" headdresses worn by French noblewomen in the late 17th century could reach heights of over two feet!
Hat-making itself became such a specialized craft that it gave rise to the phrase "mad as a hatter," which originated from the neurological damage hat makers suffered from using mercury in the felting process. Today, while hats are less obligatory in formal settings, they remain important fashion statements and cultural identifiers worldwide.
