The Komodo dragon has several names - the locals call it ora or buaya darat ("land crocodile"). But it is also called the Varan of the island of Komodo, the Komodo Varan, the giant Indonesian lizard, and the Komodo lizard.

The Komodo dragon is the largest remaining lizard of the world. The average weight is 70 kg (150 lbs), and is up to 3 m (10 ft) long, with the tail comprising almost half the length of the body. The biggest officially recorded animal exceeded 3 m (10 ft) and weighed 160 kg (352.7 lbs). In the wild, adults have no natural enemies. These giants dwell only on a few islands located in the group of Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia, one of them being called Komodo, hence the name.

They hunt in groups, killing animals as big as deer and have been know to attack humans. Their bite is thought to be venomous.
