A liger is a hybrid cross between a male lion and a female tiger. That means that ligers have parents in the same genus but are different species. Oddly, ligers tend to be larger than either of their parents; possibly the biggest cat in the world. They are social animals like lions and enjoy a good swim like tigers.

As the habitats of lions and tigers don't cross, there are no natural ligers, they are bred wholly in captivity. The oldest documented liger was 24 years old; the heaviest weighed in at 1,213 lbs (550 kg). They seem to weigh at least 900 lbs (408 kg). It is believed that somewhere between 10 and 100 ligers are now in existence.
