The term Blitzkrieg, originated in WW2 when Germany began using a new type of warfare. Instead of sending in infantry, followed by armor, artillery, and aircraft, Germany sent in fast moving armor and aircraft first. The fast moving attack would smash through their enemies defenses, and the infantry would follow up.

The Germans called this type of attack Blitzkrieg, which translates to, Lightning War. In today's battlefields, we call this type of fast overwhelming attack, Shock and Awe. During WW2, London England suffered nightly aerial bombing raids that came to be known as,The Blitz, but that's not Blitzkrieg.
