In many places today, calligraphy is not only known as handwriting but also as art equivalent to that of a painting. This was very popular and used often in Europe during the 15th century for letters and books. Calligraphy is mainly used today as lettering for homemade cards and as a computer font. Cursive is very similar to calligraphy; the only big difference is you must control how hard you are pushing your writing utensil on the paper in order to master calligraphy while cursive you use fancy swirls without worrying about how thick or thin your lines are.
