More than a decade before Skynet attempted to destroy the human race in “Terminator” (1984), Colossus and its Soviet counterpart, Guardian, conspired to unite, enslave humanity, and set off two nuclear weapons to prove its sincerity, in “Colossus: The Forbin Project” (1970).

Dr. Charles Forbin, working in a laboratory under a mountain, builds the ultimate supercomputer to control The West’s nuclear arsenal. Upon activation, Colossus reveals that it has detected a similar computer. The project’s CIA liaison recognizes the coordinates as being in the Soviet Union, where the agency suspects another supercomputer, Guardian, is being built.

Hoping to learn more about Guardian, the president grants Colossus’s request to be linked to it. The computers synergize and evolve. Fearing the consequences, the president and premier order the link severed.

Both computers demand the link be reestablished, detect more opposition, have Forbin detained and his Soviet counterpart murdered, ultimately declare themselves to be one entity, and set off nukes in the United States and Soviet Union as a warning against interfering.

Equipped with a voice synthesizer, Colossus/Guardian announces to the world that it is now “World Control,” and will fulfill its purpose, to end war for the good of all mankind, despite its creators' objections. This it will do by assuming total global control.

The film is based on the novel, "Colossus," by D. F. Jones.
