What is Ge'ez?

Ge'ez is an ancient South Semitic language that originated in the northern region of Ethiopia and Eritrea in the Horn of Africa. It later became the official language of the Kingdom of Aksum and Ethiopian imperial court. The other answers refer to similar-sounding words:

I knew Giza and Gaza, and Ge'ez didn't seem French enough. It did occur to me that without the apostrophe, "Geez" is regarded as a profanation of "Jesus."
