Hadrian's Wall, is a defensive fortification built by the Romans across Northern England that was started in AD 122. At the time Emperor Hadrian ruled the Roman Empire and this wall was it's northern most boundary. The Romans called England the province of Britannia, which is why we refer to the people as Britons. Many people believe that the wall formed a border between what is now Scotland and England but it doesn't. The wall extends all the way across England from the North Sea to the Irish Sea, a total of 73 miles. The wall has mile-castles and a full fort every 5 miles. The main point of the wall was to control the barbarians in the north especially the Picts. The wall was originally built of turf 20 feet wide and 11 feet high. Later the wall was rebuilt of stone and was generally 10 feet wide by 16-20 feet high. A large portion of the wall still stands and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
