Lingua franca refers to a common or "bridge" language used to facilitate communication by speakers of different languages, often for reasons of trade. Latin once served this purpose throughout Europe, later French and now English. American Indians also used trade languages prior to the European influx. Lingua francas are commonly used throughout the world and throughout history. Jesuits still use Latin as a lingua franca to communicate with each other regardless of their national origins.
