What is Pakistan's largest artificial lake?
Keenjher Lake or Kalari Lake is located 22 kilometers away from Thatta and about 122 kilometers from Karachi and 80 Kilometers from Hyderabad. It is one of the largest man-made lakes in Pakistan.
Keenjher lake was built possibly in the 12th century by the local rulers as a water reservoir for the then capital of Sindh Thatta.
Today Keenjher lake is an extremely beautiful blue water lake that plays an important ecological role in the functioning of the Indus River basin. It is extremely important for a wide variety of breeding, passage, and wintering waterbirds. The mid-winter waterbird counts of the late 1980s averaged 140,000 birds per winter.
Karachi gets about 78% of drinking water from Keenjher Lake thru 2 canals specially built for this purpose. The Keenjhar Lake Resort is being re-organized and various existing facilities are being upgraded by introducing new facilities from STDCs (Sindh Transmission & Dispatch Company). A project for up-gradation and development of Keenjhar is underway, The project of Rs. 10.00 million is being carried out by District Officer C&W (Communication and Works Department) Thatta. Keenjher lake has been symbolic in the poetry of Sindhi and was referred to as a serene turquoise water lake where romances happen and where poets say poetry with devotion.
