Plutophobia (from Pluto, the Roman god of wealth) is the fear of wealth. People suffering plutophobia would not want any money, while more severe sufferers would live away from the family and society. This fear can often be triggered due to the fear of losing money.

As with any phobia, the symptoms vary by person depending on their level of fear. The symptoms typically include extreme anxiety, dread and anything associated with panic such as shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, excessive sweating, nausea, dry mouth, nausea, inability to articulate words or sentences, dry mouth and shaking.

People experiencing plutophobia may have a strong distaste for someone who is rich and may even believe that they are the anti-Christ or that they are simply an evil person.

There is no exact cause of plutophobia. However, genetics and one's environment may play a significant role. Regardless of reason or cause, people with the condition are irrationally fearful of wealth and their convictions are often out of touch with reality.

Medication can be prescribed to treat the condition. Other treatment options include:

Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Energy Psychology (a combination of Eastern approaches to the mind and body with Western psychology and psychotherapy ideas).
