Syngenesophobia is a fear of one’s relatives. The word itself is of Greek origin: syn means “together with”, gen – “descent” or “heredity”, and phobia means “fear”.

This kind of phobia is rare and usually afflicts grown-up people, though the roots of this psychological disorder may be found in childhood. When a person suffers from Syngenesophobia, other people may think s/he is rude or ill-bred. However, this person is extremely afraid of relatives and often tries to break off any connections with relatives.

It is believed that heredity, genetics, and brain chemistry combined with traumatic events at an early age play a major role in the development of the phobia.
