What is the Bay of Fundy famous for?

The Bay of Fundy is a bay between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, with a small portion touching the US state of Maine.

The Bay of Fundy is one of the 7 wonders of North America. The highest tides on earth, the rarest whales in the world, semi-precious minerals and dinosaur fossils; all this convinced an international panel of experts in 2014 to choose the Bay of Fundy as one of the natural wonders of the world.

The Bay’s tides officially measure over 15 m (50′ in height), but the incoming tide is not a 50′ wall of water. It takes 6 hours for the tides to change from low tide to high tide. That means it takes more than an hour for the tide to rise 10′ vertically. But the tide is a powerful force. In some places, it can change the direction of a river or create tidal bore that flows against the current. There are many places where you can see and experience the awesomeness of the tides.

When the tide is out, you can descend a wooden staircase (which is where the picture was taken from) to the bottom of the bay and wander around, picking up stones, etc. Fascinating place. There is also a place in Moncton (Bore View Park) where a clock announces when the next tidal bore is arriving, which is cool to watch, especially when people surf on it.

The tides are so big and powerful that the St. John river which flows into the Bay of Fundy, reverses its course twice a day when the high tides push it back against itself.

So say "highest" tides and not "largest" tides which makes no sense.

My family vacationed there in the 60s,still one of the most beautiful places we traveled to! The tides were amazing,when the tide would go out ,people would run out to the sand and collect shells,stranded fish, claims and lobsters! A picture of it adorns my wall!

Why do we thumbs down people for asking a logical question. The first time I ran into it I thought the same as I considered us North American And Canada as another country so it threw me too. That was not long ago I learned it just not today.

Technically it’s the highest tides. The tidal range in the Bay of Fundy is about 16 metres (52 ft). (The average tidal range worldwide is about one metre (3 ft 3 in).
