Although his parents called him George, the famous bank robber and Chicago gangster, who was known as "Baby Face" Nelson, was born Lester Joseph Gillis on Dec 6, 1908. After years of crime, he gave himself the alias "Big George" Nelson. He also used aliases of Jimmy Burnett and Jimmy Burnell. He earned the nickname "Baby Face" by his fellow street thugs due to his youthful appearance. He was only five feet four inches tall and weighed roughly 133 pounds.

"Baby Face" Nelson received notoriety as a thief, bank robber and killer during the early 1930s; but, his life of crime began at an early age. By the age of 12, he was an accomplished car thief and was arrested at age 13 for auto theft.

At age, 21, Nelson robbed his first bank on April 21, 1930 and began a four year spree of bank heists, home invasions and ruthless killings. He became J. Edgar Hoover's "Public Enemy No. 1" after previous Public Enemies, John Dillinger (July 22, 1934) and “Pretty Boy” Floyd (Oct 22, 1934), were killed in shootouts with the FBI.

In little more than a month as Public Enemy No. 1, Lester Gillis, aka "Baby Face" Nelson, was fatally shot in a battle with federal agents (Nov. 27, 1934) near Barrington, IL, a suburb northwest of Chicago. A plaque at Langendorf Park commemorates the site of the "Battle of Barrington" that also claimed the lives of two FBI agents.
