William Royce Scaggs was born on June 8, 1944 in Canton, Ohio. When the family moved to Plano, Texas, they sent him to a private school, St. Mark’s School of Texas, in nearby Dallas. There, a classmate named him “Bosley”, which then became “Boz”.

At age 12, after he had learned to play the guitar, he met Steven Haworth “Steve” Miller at St. Mark’s. In 1959, Scaggs served as the vocalist for the Marksmen, an early Steve Miller band. Together, Scaggs and Miller attended the University of Wisconsin and played in a number of blues bands, including the Fabulous Knight Trains and the Ardells.

Scaggs left Wisconsin to pursue a music career in London and then Sweden, releasing his first album, “Boz”, which bombed. Back in the States, he landed in San Francisco, in 1967. He again teamed up with Miller, performing with the Steve Miller Band on its first two albums. In 1969, he released his second album, “Boz Scaggs”, which met with moderate success.

In 1967, backed by the musicians who would later form the band Toto, Scaggs hit pay-dirt with his seventh album. “Silk Degrees” yielded four hit singles, including “Lowdown” and “Lido Shuffle”. The album stayed on Billboard 200 Chart for 115 weeks, peaking at number two. It also reached sixth place on the Rhythm and Blues Chart, and was certified “5x Multi-Platinum” by the Recording Industry Association of America.

In 2017, Boz Scaggs and his wife grow grapes and make wine in California, and Boz still makes professional music.
