What is the capital city of Nagaland, a northeastern state of India?
Nagaland is a state in northeastern India. It is bordered by the state of Arunachal Pradesh to the north, Assam to the west, Manipur to the south and the Sagaing Region of Myanmar to the east. Kohima is the capital city of Nagaland with a population of 267,988, of which 121,088 or 45% lived in urban areas according to the 2011 census of India. Known as Kewhira, Kohima was founded in 1878 when the British Empire established its headquarters of the then Naga Hills District of Assam Province. It officially became the capital after the state of Nagaland was inaugurated in 1963. Kohima was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of World War ll. In 2013, the British National Army Museum voted the Battle of Kohima to be "Britain's Greatest Battle".
Kohima constitutes both a district and a municipality. Kohima lies on the foothills of the Japfu range located south of the District (25.67°N, 94.12°E) and has an average elevation of 1,261 meters (4,137 feet). Kohima has pleasant winters with little rainfall and very warm, very rainy summers. Tourism plays an important role in the city's economy. Kohima has numerous shopping centers ranging from traditional markets to modern shopping malls. There are many dedicated markets for local products such as traditional handlooms and handicrafts.
Christianity is the largest religion in the district, followed by 87% of the people. English and Angami-Pochuri regional languages are mainly spoken in Kohima.
