Springfield is the capital city of the state Illinois. European Americans settled in the late 1810s. It's only the sixth most populated city of Illinois. Abraham Lincoln is the most famous past resident of Springfield, and the city is full of historic sites connected with him.

The Illinois State Capitol, the main building of the state, is located there. It houses legislative and executive branches of the government of the state. Illinois joined the United Stated in 1818 and the capitol is the sixth such building since that times.
