Aizawl is the largest city as well as the capital of the state of Mizoram in India and was officially established on 25 February 1890. The beautiful city is located in the north of the Tropic of Cancer in the northern part of Mizoram and is situated on a ridge 1132 meters (3714 ft) above sea level, with the Tlawng river valley to its west and the Tuirial river valley to its east. In the summer, the temperature ranges from 20-30 degrees °C (68-86 °F), in the winter it's 11-21 °C (52-70 °F). With a population of 293,416 as per the latest census, Aizawl strongly reflects the different communities of the ethnic Mizo people.
Aizawl is an ideal destination for people looking for adventure sports like paragliding in the Durtang cliffs and rafting in the Tlawng river. Aizawl is famous for Arsa Buhchiar, a combination of rice and chicken dish that is usually served or topped with local herbs. Mizo people are very proficient in making handicraft items of bamboo and cane such as baskets, furniture, hats, utensils. Another product in Aizawl is fabric shawl (a rectangular shaped fabric piece draped over the head and shoulders) woven by Mizo women. Aizawl also offers great trekking options in verdant forests and valleys. English and local language Mizo are spoken freely in Aizawl.
