It was part of the Russian Empire from the late 18th Century until 1918, After a brief period alone as the capital of the Ukrainian People's Republic, it became part of the Soviet Union from 1921 until 1991, when that Union was dissolved.

During World War Two, 600,000 Soviet troops died or were captured during the Battle of Kiev in 1941. In the German occupation that resulted, 100,000 civilians of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds were killed. At Babi Yar, a ravine in the city, 34,000 Jews were massacred.
