Admitted to the union on December 28, 1846 Iowa was 29th state to join the United States of America.

The capital of the State of Iowa was originally located in Iowa City, Iowa as of May 4th, 1839 (Iowa still being considered a U.S. Territory at the time). This remained the seat of government until November 6th 1857 at which time the capitol was changed to Des Moines.

The origin of Des Moines, Iowa was that of a U.S. Army fort on the Des Moines river. The town of Fort Des Moines became incorporated on September 22nd, 1851 and abbreviated its name in 1857.
