"Taxi" is an American television situation comedy that originally aired from 1978 to 1983. The series won 18 Emmy Awards, including three for Outstanding Comedy Series. It focuses on the everyday lives of a handful of New York City taxi drivers and their abusive dispatcher (Danny DeVito). "Taxi" was produced by the John Charles Walters Company and was created by James L. Brooks, Stan Daniels, David Davis, and Ed Weinberger. Despite the humor of the show, "Taxi" often tackled such dramatic life issues as drug addiction, blindness, racism, divorce, and many others.

The diminutive American born actor Danny DeVito (b. 1944) plays the role of the shows abusive dispatcher, Louie De Palma. Louie is a mean, foul mouthed, offensive, grumpy dispatcher, and is the primary antagonist to the cabbies. He has been accused of sexually and physically harassing a female employee on multiple accounts, one of which got him temporarily fired and almost taken to court. He is also sometimes abusive to his mother. But, despite how awful and horrid Louie can be, he is a deep-down nice person, and cares about his friends.
