What is the fourth Irish province along with Ulster, Munster and Leinster?
Ireland has historically been divided into four provinces: Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster. The Irish word for this territorial division, cúige, literally means "fifth part". This implies that there used to be five provinces and in the medieval period there were more. The number of provinces fluctuated until 1610 when they were permanently set by the English administration of King James I. The provinces of Ireland serve no administrative or political purposes, but function as historical and cultural entities.
