Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, or MGM, is an American media company that makes movies and television programmes. The company is named after three companies that merged in 1924: Metro Pictures, Samuel Goldwyn Productions, and Louis B. Mayer Productions.

Before World War II, MGM was the largest movie studio in Hollywood. They made more money than any other studio, often releasing one movie a week as well as short films and cartoons. Their output started to decline during the 1940s when the advent of television started drawing people away from cinemas and movie theatres.

In 1981 MGM's major stockholder, Kirk Kerkorian, bought United Artists and merged the two companies as MGM/UA Entertainment. In 1985, Turner Broadcasting System announced that they would buy MGM, leaving United Artists with Kerkorian. In late 1986, Turner Broadcasting System split into two companies: Turner Broadcasting System and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

'The Wizard of Oz' is one of the most famous movies made by MGM. It was released in 1939 and starred Judy Garland. MGM has also made other famous movies, including '2001: A Space Odyssey', the 'James Bond' movies and the 'Rocky' movies.
