The Sergeant Major of the Army is the highest ranking enlisted Soldier in the United States Army and a unique non-commissioned rank and position of office. This position oversees all Noncommissioned Officers, and serves as consultant and advisor to the Army Chief of Staff, a four star General. The Chief of Staff of the Army created the position in 1966. The Sergeant Major of the Army wears a unique rank insignia and unique collar insignia. The Sergeant Major of the Army along with his counterparts of the other service branches are the only members of the U.S. armed forces below the rank of brigadier general to be authorized a positional color (flag).
