What is the highest mountain in California?
Mount Whitney, though less well known than Mount Shasta, is the highest mountain in California and the contiguous United States or the lower 48 states as well. The only American mountains higher than Whitney are in Alaska.

Live on the northwest side of Mt Shasta, have always known Whitney was higher. Shasta, btw, is 14,172.

The staging area is over 8000 ft, more than half up, same with Mt Shasta. For the healthy and adventures, try both in one weekend.
